The Risk Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) is a collaborative initiative dedicated to tracking innovative ideas in the risk management area and transforming them into viable AI solution prototypes. RAIL serves as knowledge and solution hub where all relevant risk-related (Gen)AI use cases and proofs of concept (POCs) are collected, developed and further analysed for future internal operationalisation.
In your role as a data scientist in the RAIL team, you will be responsible to translate business needs into (Gen)AI prototypes, identify synergy potentials and provide a comprehensive overview on the relevant aspects needed to support a decision regarding the further industrialisation within the bank.
Your Tasks
- Develop and actively contribute to the data science tasks in risk-related (Gen)AI use cases and POCs, where the development of predictive models and learning from data measurably supports the risk divisions in areas such as process optimization, automation, decision making etc.
- Ready to deliver in a team and independently, proactively searching for assistance and exchanging with a team and with other related functions within the bank and outside to find most optimal solutions.
- Being genuinely interested in data and new technologies (AI) and understanding of the main regulatory principles relating to the usage of big data, application of the AI solutions and respective requirements (e.g. AI act) to bring innovative problem solutions into practical application in the banking industry.
- Providing comprehensive overview of the proposed solutions as well as related findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Having a profound understanding of the Erste internal banking processes with a special focus on risk management, modelling and relevant IT implementation platforms.
Your Background
- Minimum 2 years of professional experience as a data scientist or in an analytical role, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a focus on quantitative disciplines.
- Understanding of the banking industry with a focus on risk management and challenges which the industry is facing via emerging AI and other technological trends.
- Demonstrated experience with deploying advanced statistical methods and common machine learning models to identify trends and patterns in data and extract valuable business insights.
- Hands-on experience in the design and development of applications utilizing the Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) pattern, which includes steps such as chunking, embedding, and querying a Large Language Model (LLM).
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Spark and SQL, data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau), version control systems (e.g. GitHub) as well as an understanding of the cloud platforms (Google, Azure etc.).
- Strong communication skills and ability to translate complex topics into comprehensive context. Fluent spoken and written English required, German skills would be an advantage.

- The minimum wage for this full-time position in accordance with the collective agreement with complete fulfillment of the functional profile is EUR 43.554,09 gross per year. But this is just a formality - we would be happy to talk about your actual salary in person!
